The Goju Ryu Technical series of instructional programs represent a
important part of the legacy of this remarkable teacher. It is a time
capsule, filled with the author’s extensive knowledge, to be preserved
for this and future generations—an immersion course in traditional
Okinawan Goju Ryu karate of such scope and intensity that it eclipses
everything that preceded it. Saifa and Seipai kata were chosen as the
subjects of this, the first of six volumes in the series, as they are
the Goju Ryu kata most frequently learned by students of other styles
of karate. With this in mind the author, in his demonstrations, pays
special attention to the core concepts of Goju Ryu such as synchronised
breathing and the harmonising of hard and soft, that the viewer might
not be familiar with. This program was filmed in studio using four
cameras to give the clearest possible view of the movements and
applications of the kata. Slow motion is used extensively to reveal
subtleties of technique, many of which are explained by the author in
great detail in his lectures. Well organised navigational menus make
this program a delight to use, and the superbly edited sound track and
attractive graphics are the hallmark of its production team that is the
most celebrated in the field of martial arts instructional programming
